U Pečuju, Mađrska, 21. avgusta 1921. godine, proglašena je Baranjsko-bajska srpsko-mađarska republika, a čuveni slikar Petar Dobrović je proglašen za njenog predsednika. Troje mladih Aleksandar Štajner, Helena Hajtfogel i Tivadar Kerekeš aktivno učestvuju u stvaranju republike. Međutim, nakon njenog pada prinuđeni su da beže. Aleksandar i Helena dospevaju u Sombor, Jugoslavija, gde pokušavaju da promovišu svoje revolucionarne ideje, iako za to ne nelaze podršku...
