The DC graphic novel Red will become a movie this year (October 22nd, in fact), and principal photography has begun in Toronto. Why are we telling you this about a movie that isn't part of some mega-franchise? Because it looks like it could go the distance.


ummit, the Twilight folks, signed up Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Julian McMahon, Richard Dreyfuss, and Brian Cox to star in the film, and that's a pretty good start. We'll cover our eyes at the mention of director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) and the writers of Whiteout, one of the least successful comic book adaptations in a while, and focus on the more concrete positives.

"I'm so excited at the phenomenal cast that Robert and our script have attracted," said producer Lorenzo di Boneventura. "I think audiences are going to have a great time."

Summit is excited too; but then, would you expect the honchos to release a statement along the lines of "We're really nervous about this one. I've gotta be honest with you...I don't know what we were thinking."

You don't get that from Summit's Erik Feig, who's quoted by MovieWeb as saying, "Red is that classic project with a little bit of something for everyone. We are thrilled to see it come to vivid life with an outstanding cast, incredibly talented director, and top notch producing team. It's gonna be a good one!"

From the little I've read about Red the comic book, this is truly one of them that belongs in the movies. It's the tale of a former CIA agent (guess which movie tough guy is playing that role) who is brought out of retirement when an assassin targets him and his ladyfriend (Parker). To fight the good fight, he gets the band back together, meaning we'll see Freeman, Malkatraz, and Mirren as aged CIA operatives, which rules.

Today at Comic-Con International, Warner Bros. released six character banners for Sucker Punch, the “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns” film from Watchmen and 300 director Zack Snyder.

A dark, violent fantasy filled with guns, monsters, mechas and explosions, Sucker Punch follows Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman confined to a mental institution from which she creates an alternate reality while attempting to escape. The film, which opens on March 25, 2011, also stars Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Jon Hamm, Michael Jai White, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung and Scott Glenn.

Sucker Punch will be showcased Saturday during the Warner Bros. presentation in Hall H alongside Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Brad Pitt is officially attached to star in an adaptation of World War Z, Max Brooks’ bestselling post-apocalyptic horror novel. Paramount Pictures is reportedly eyeing a summer 2012 release.

The confirmation comes from the floor of Comic-Con International in San Diego, where the author told MTV News that Paramount also has optioned the film rights to his earlier book The Zombie Survival Guide and his 2009 graphic novel The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks.

Published in 2006, World War Z uses first-hand accounts of survivors to chronicle a worldwide zombie plague that threatens to wipe out civilization.

The novel was optioned in 2007 by Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment following a bidding war with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way. The initial screenplay was written by J. Michael Straczynski, but last year Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom) was brought in for a rewrite. Brooks tells MTV that Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) is still attached to direct.

Brooks, whose Recorded Attacks was published through a partnership between Random House and Avatar Press, will be signing at the Avatar booth (#2701) throughout Comic-Con.
