Marvel gets a new Editor-in-chief

So. Alex Alonso promoted to Editor-In-Chief of Marvel, Joe Quesada concentrated on being Chief Creative Officer and Tom Brevoort now VP Publishing. What might it all mean?

1. Joe Quesada is no longer editor-in-chief. Might this mean that DC Comics may be willing to engage in a DC/Marvel crossover project? Back in the day, Bob Wayne said it could only happen when Joe Quesada was gone. Well, he may be CCO, but he’s not editor-in-chief anymore. Does that count? Axel Alonso built his career at DC Comics… of course there was some animosity over Axel’s decision to move to Marvel, especially his involvement in the meeting between Marvel and DC where Marvel announced they were leaving the Comics Code – and only brought ex-DC Marvel staff to the meeting to rub it in.

2. Mark Millar pledged that he would not work for DC Comics while Joe Quesada was in charge. Will his movement to CCO be a get out clause to allow Mark Millar to write Superman for DC without breaking his word? Of course. it’s arguable whether Millar would want to write Superman after his own Superior, and the financial and creative awards that true creator owned comics have brought his, as opposed to DC’s creator participant model.

3. Axel Alonso seems to be of a similar mind to Joe Quesada in terms of content, creating superheroes with a more adult/real world edge than previously, as well as encouraging comic book creators to follow their own muse. Don’t expect Peter Parker to suddenly be remarried to Mary Jane Watson any time soon. Editorially, Axel and Tom had been assuming a number of Joe Quesada’s day-to-day roles anyway. This could be seen as a continuance of that. But it is a good day to be Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Matt Fraction, or any similar talent that Axel headhunted to the company.

4, Tom Brevoort’s elevation to Senior Vice President of Publishing doesn’t have the word editor in his job title. Working under Dan Buckley, it’s presumed his role would be similar. But will he still have the editorial input he used to have in the line?

5. Don’t expect Darwyn Cooke to be getting work at Marvel any time soon. He threw a pint of beer over Axel at a comics convention, in the belief that Axel had announced a line of comics identical to the one Darwyn and friends had presented a full pitch for months previously. At the time one Marvel wag told me it was the first DC exclusive he’d seen signed in beer.

During the interview, Alan said;

When Dave Gibbons phoned me up, he assured me that these prequels and sequels would be handled by ‘the industry’s top-flight talents’. Now, I don’t think that the contemporary industry actually has a ‘top-flight’ of talent. I don’t think it’s even got a middle-flight or a bottom-flight of talent…

At the end of the day, if they haven’t got any properties that are valuable enough, but they have got these ‘top-flight industry creators’ that are ready to produce these prequels and sequels to Watchmen, well this is probably a radical idea, but could they not get one of the ‘top-flight industry creators’ to come up with an idea of their own? Why are DC Comics trying to exploit a comic book that I wrote 25 years ago if they have got anything? Sure they ought to have had an equivalent idea since? I could ask about why Marvel Comics are churning out or planning to bring out my ancient Marvelman stories, which are even older, if they had a viable idea of their own in the quarter-century since I wrote those works. I mean, surely that would be a much easier solution than all of this clandestine stuff? Just simply get some of your top-flight talent to put out a book that the wider public outside of the comics field find as interesting or as appealing as the stuff that I wrote 25 years ago. It shouldn’t be too big an ask, should it? I wouldn’t have thought so. And it would solve an awful lot of problems. They must have one creator, surely, in the entire American industry that could do equivalent work to something I did 25 years ago. It would be insulting to think that there weren’t.




And Jason reacted saying;

Интересно. Гo прочитав и со Alan Moore и решив во дуелов да "навивам" за Moore...

alan moore e totalno vo pravo....koincidencija e sto bas preeska duri vrtev stripovi, mi dojde toa na pamet: AARON E NAJLOSIOT writer vo comics deneska......ednostavno nema ni idei ni pa gi realizira i tie BEDNITE....a e tolku furan od marvel...nesto nesfatlivo...bi go sporedil so chuck dixon na osnova na turkanje od kompaniite, ali ipak i on e bolji od nego poso go definirase nightwing kako BADASS...ovoj samo hmm...pisuva i guess? ocajno

Moore се осеќа обесправен, ама ипак е Alan Moore Да речеш дека денешните стрипови не чинат и да надоврзеш со изјава дека не читаш уопште нови стрипови... Звучи ко еден наш самопрогласен издавач. Никој не ја негира големината на неговите дела. Watchmen, Swamp Thing, Vendetta... Има и тешки срања, ама па кој нема. Жал ми е за Moore кој живее по некои вонземски принципи, и заради кои не може да се вклопи во светот, и заради кои испаднал изигран од издавачките коорпорации - негов проблем, нели. Светот во кој живее егзистира на база на пари, не на шамански магии и семе од кобра. Е сега... Да излезеш и да пљукаш по сите други кои се нафатиле на твојот занает, со ароганцијата дека никад нема да биде никој добар колку тебе, заради сосема друга причина, едноставно ме тера jас него да го пљукнам (да можам). Aaron апсолутно ништо не ми значи. Се слагам со Geek дека оноа Weapon X беше тривијално срање. Ама ок, разбирам зошто е навреден. Се слагам со него.
Можеби не се "Watchmen", ама после Moore имало прекрасни стрипови, многу од нив подобри од "1963" или "Lost girls".

^ Tачно. Големината на Алан Мур и мојата огромна почит кон него и неговото дело настрана, мислам дека Брајан баеѓи ја утна поентата на неговата изјавата: никаде не пишува дека не чита нови стрипови, нити па настапи со holier-than-thou ароганција дека а најјак у маало (критиката беше повеќе насочена кон индустријата, не директно кон авторите), туку рече поштено човекот дека треба да се измислуваат оригинални ствари, не да се губи време на ствари стари четврт век со холивудски приквел/сиквел финти. Всушност, би додал дека само така навистина прогресира и се редефинира медиумот. Види го само Вертиго, или оној бум на графички новели во 80-тите на кои алудира Мур. Ако некогаш се калел челикот, тоа е во таквите периоди...

Лаф, не си во право.
Алан Мур, иако е генијалец, и ужасно добар креативец, и целосно екцентрична личност, се става над нив(мислам на индустријата, стриповската индустрија генерално.).

Значи, глупо е да плукаш на некој кој до вчера ти давал пари (работодавец), а особено некој покрај тебе кој исто така се бори за свое „место под сонцето“(колега и соработник).
Секој си има „успони и падови“, и од едната и од другата страна, ама да се дистанцираш од настаните и да кажуваш што е добро а што е лошо - не иде. (освен ако е за мајтап, ама тоа не е муабет за тука ...)
Одговорот на Арон, онака директен (па дури и вулгарен) е само реакција на сопствениот „хвалоспев“ на Мур.
И според мене, арно му го плеснал.

(мала дигресија - од документарецот што го гледав за DC, сватив дека Американците ја „подвиткале опашката“ и ги имаат викнато Мур (и компанија) Британци да го „спасуваат“ американскиот стрип (па после се појави Вертиго итн). Богами, после 25 години, со право можат да се „чаламат “ уметници како Мур, Морисон, Гајман итн...ама тоа не значи дека нема да им одбруси некое сега младо (во подем) Америкаче, нели? )
Се е смо борба за превласт, и се е дозволено во љубовта и војната...

/едит: ни ти Теоец не си во право. Алам Мур цело време алудира дека се прават само римејкови и дека нема оригинална идеја. Па не е баш така - пазарот е навистина голем, има од се по нешто, но во време на поголема економска нестабилност (омилениот збор на Ацика:економска рецесија) нормално е да ги ставаш своите пари (инвестиции) на добро познат производ без да експериментира со ново, барем периодов.
Алан Мур сака да ја натера водата во своја воденица, и сака да се исценка подобро за своите (веќе докажани и покажани) производи, верувај ми. Затоа е сега цела оваа галама (за ова можам и да се кладам!)...пак, море секогаш се пари во прашање.
