That new Spawn animated series will be for adults only


Todd McFarlane's plans for a new Spawn animated series are still coming together, but he's already promising that one thing won't change from the previous show seen on HBO more than a decade ago.

According to MTV, McFarlane is adamant that the show will "absolutely" be for mature audiences only. He explained, "We're going to a cable network, and that's their bread and butter. ...They want stuff that isn't what you can find on ABC, NBC and CBS. They've covered that field. We have now an area where we can actually do shows that get a little grittier, a little darker, a little more risque."

The original program ran on HBO between 1997 and 1999, during which it won an Emmy for Outstanding Animation Program while also filled with sex, violence and profanity. With that in mind, McFarlane says his approach to the new show is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," adding: "They're going, 'Just give us what you're doing. You know what you're doing, just bring it over here and don't put it on their channel, put it on my channel.' So I don't think it's going to be an issue once we get down to it."

McFarlane told MTV last month that he was currently working with various studios on animation and technology tests to determine the best way to produce what he envisions as a half-hour weekly series.

It was in late 2009 that McFarlane announced that his signature creation would be coming back in a new animated series. Although he's apparently wanted to pick up where the old show left off for a while, legal issues prevented him from getting the new program off the ground until this year. Hopefully we'll see it sometime in 2011—dark and nasty, the way Spawn should be.
