It's full steam ahead for the next Batman adventure, with the confirmation that Christopher Nolan is definitely directing, and that the shoot is likely to start next April. As such, the first pieces of the casting jigsaw have been falling into place.

Christian Bale is obviously back in the title role, and many of the other names from Nolan's first two Batman films - Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman - are also more than likely to return. But the first newcomer to Nolan's Gotham City? That'd be Tom Hardy.

Deadline has reported that the actor, who appeared in Inception for Nolan, has signed up to appear in a lead role in the new film, even if we've no idea right now just what that lead role could be. The logical bet would be that he's a villain of some sorts - could he even be The Riddler? - but we await confirmation of that in due course.

Batman 3, as we seem to be calling it, is out in July 2012.

There was never much doubt, but now it’s finally official: The Wrap and The New York Times report that Warner Bros. and MGM have finalized a deal to finance the troubled adaptation of The Hobbit. Peter Jackson is, of course, directing the pair of films, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s famed fantasy novel.

Now all that stands between Bilbo Baggins and Smaug’s treasure is … a union dispute that could push production out of New Zealand and force the studio to redraw the estimated $400-million budget. According to The Wrap, $30 million has already been spent on the project, which has a planned February start date. The first film is set to open on Dec. 19, 2012.

Hugh Jackman: Wolverine 2 will be a 'very different' X-Men movie



Hugh Jackman said on Monday night at a benefit in New York City that he expects Wolverine 2 will not be a "usual" X-Men movie. But what exactly did he mean by that?

Jackman made his comments to Vulture, which caught the Australian star just as he was sitting down to dinner. First noting that he was bulking up to play Logan again by eating "six meals a day," Jackman predicted that Wolverine 2 is "hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It's going to be the best one, I hope. Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different."

With Darren Aronofsky, the genius behind Pi, The Fountain and the upcoming Black Swan, all but confirmed to direct this sixth X-Men-related feature, it seems almost certain that Wolverine 2 will head down a different path than its underwhelming predecessor, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. "This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He's kind of dark," Jackman said. "But, you know, this is a change of pace ... [Aronofsky's] going to make it fantastic. There's going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure."
The script is by Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie and is said to be based on Wolverine's famed early adventures in Japan from the comic books, although a lot of the movie's interiors will reportedly be shot in New York so that both Aronofsky and Jackman can be close to their families.

Filming begins early next year on the project, possibly in March, with a 2012 release likely. Will Aronofsky's art-house sensibilities fit well with an established comic-book franchise? Or will the heavy hand of executives at 20th Century Fox give him the same hard time they gave Gavin Hood, director of the first Wolverine? Can this director and star really make the best X-Men movie yet?

Peter Jackson officially announces the cast of The Hobbit (Yes!)



The Hobbit is moving out of New Zealand to Australia. Or to London. Or maybe it isn't after all. We don't know and we're not sure that Peter Jackson knows either. But one thing Jackson does know—and now WE know—is who'll be starring in the long-delayed movie.

According to Deadline, the following roles have officially been filled:

Martin Freeman is set to play Bilbo Baggins, the adventurous Hobbit whose adventures and discovery of the One Ring leads the story up to The Lord of the Rings.
Richard Armitage (MI-5 and Captain America: The First Avenger) will play Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from a thieving dragon.

Aidan Turner (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) will play Kili and Fili, members of the Company of Dwarves.

Graham McTavish (Secretariat) will play Dwalin, John Callen (Power Rangers Jungle Fury) will play Oin; Stephen Hunter (All Saints) will play Bombur, and Mark Hadlow (King Kong) plays Dori, while Peter Hambleton (The Strip) will play Gloin.


James Nesbitt, David Tennant, Stephen Fry, Saoirse Ronan and Bill Nighy may also be cast, though nothing is definite as yet.
Of Freeman as Bilbo, Jackson said that, "Despite the various rumors and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us ... There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave—exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."
